Abstract

In last few years, Kinoshita's (University of Southern Denmark - SDU) and Dr. Rosangela Itri's (University of São Paulo - USP) groups have been investigating the effect of photosensitizer-mediated oxidative stress of porphyrin in the red blood cell (RBC) membrane. Through scientific visits of both groups and by setting a micropipette manipulation system at IFUSP, RBC project developed quite well and papers are currently under way. Here we propose a new project to investigate the effects of the oxidative stress on the neuronal cell membrane, SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. We hypothesize that the photo-oxidative stress causes the membrane mechanical property change, especially the cell membrane elasticity and the cell-cell adhesion, with the cytoskeletal network reformation as we found it in the RBC project (paper attached in other documents). We believe that this new collaboration project will transfer further advanced knowledge and skills of photo-oxidative stress research to our groups for understanding brain damage, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
