Wikipedia Education Program as active teaching methodology and crowdsourcing tool in hearing health

Abstract

Information and communication technologies aim to facilitate the teaching and learning process, while opening up possibilities for new forms of action, interaction, and knowledge acquisition. Access to free information is understood to be a necessary step for promoting health. The main objective of the present proposal is to evaluate the use of Wikipedia as an instrument of active teaching methodology, as well as a health education tool. It is based on the hypothesis that the use of this tool can contribute to the promotion of digital and scientific literacy among graduate and undergraduate students, as well as quality professional/academic training on issues involved with hearing health. The hearing health theme was chosen because of the burden it represents for the population's quality of life. Specific objectives: 1) Evaluation of the process, different strategies and results of the implementation of educational activities involving Wikipedia as an educational platform in subjects in the audiology area of Speech-Language Pathology courses in 5 Universities in 3 different regions of Brazil (south, southeast and northeast), Canada (University of Montreal), and in a global virtual campaign coordinated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and University of Virginia, United States and the World Health Organization, in Switzerland. The focus will be on hearing health in life cycles (neonates, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly). 2) Analysis of the view of higher education students who produced entries during their academic training about the impact that this methodology had on their professional training, as well as their condition of reader and writer of texts belonging to the academic genre. 3) Analysis of the impact of interventions regarding the expansion of existing content or creation/translation of new entries related to hearing health, inclusion of images, sounds and/or video files, and references, at a minimum in the Portuguese, English and French Wikipedias. The results of this project will serve as a basis for future initiatives to promote health in general and to create opportunities for the use of Wikipedia as a tool of active teaching methodology.
