Abstract

The distribution smart microgrids have gained importance due to the search for more active and smart distribution systems. There is still no consensus in the literature regarding an optimal methodology for the management of microgrids, both connected and isolated, due to the diversity of operational scenarios and the lack of standardization.The main objective of this work is the development of research in the field of electrical smart grids, with focus on low-voltage distribution microgrids for applications in isolated and interconnected systems. The study of smart microgrids aims at obtaining theoretical and practical knowledge of the variables that affect the performance of these types of systems, operating both isolated and connected to the traditional electricity grid.The adoption of microgrids together with hybrid electricity generation systems constitute an alternative for the supply of isolated communities and also a viable option for the insertion of distributed generation in the conventional grid in Brazil. The optimal sizing of the microgrid, taking into account several agents that influence its performance (hybrid generation system, storage system, operation strategy, and demand side management), reduces the system operation cost, without compromising its reliability.The use of microgrids connected to the conventional electricity system can help to significantly reduce the losses due to energy transmission and distribution and can damp the demand curve in peak hours, postponing the necessity for expansion of the conventional system and enhancing the supply reliability.In the case of isolated systems, the hybrid microgrids AC-DC are key for rural electrification, a subject of great importance both economically and environmentally, where the locally available renewable energy sources, including their prediction and eventual complementarity, as well as the storage systems in various forms and types, play an important role in supplying reliable and good quality energy. Still in this aspect, there is the necessity of an adequate regulation.In this scope is the expansion and consolidation of the infrastructure of the Laboratory of Photovoltaic Systems (LSF) of the Institute of Energy and Environment (IEE) of the University of São Paulo (USP) for research and capacity building in electricity distribution smart microgrids supplied by hybrid generation systems, using the solar photovoltaic and wind sources, as well as storage systems. This work has been developed for a few years in the LSF/IEE/USP and it is intended to be intensified, improving its research and capacity building conditions.The study includes the evaluation of operation strategies which are more adequate for hybrid systems and the search for figures of merit to characterize the viability of design and installation of microgrids for test purposes, their continuous monitoring, tests for simulations of common interest situations and of system components, different dispatch strategies, and demand scenarios.
