Abstract

Zeolites are known, studied and used essentially since their discovery. They are solids of paramount importance in the present chemical industry, with special relevance for the oil refinery one.The catalysts use in the fuel industry have shown the need for more accessible acid sites that are as active in a more open surface as in the precursor solids. Such materials are importante not only on the oil cracking reactions but also in the recent biomass industry for the production of fuels and chemical products, also in the presence of water as solvent or in the biomass composition. This landscape has stimulated the research proposed here. The main objective is the determination of the acidity of surface sites in lamellar/layered solids (2D), in the absence and in the presence of water. In that direction, recently reported synthetic routes will be used not only for the production of the desired solids, but also for the general knowledge of the research group. Deep characterization of acidity will be carried out with methods already developed in the group, in hydrated and dehydrated lamellar/layered solids, to establish acidity standards in water and their difference with the acidity in dehydrated solids. As a final study, catalytic hydrolysis of sugars with varied molecular dimensions will be developed and shall confirm the increased access to the acid sites as well as their activities in the lamellar/layered solids.
