A study on the integration of chemical and biological control of the soybean aphid via mathematical modeling

Abstract

This project proposes a mathematical model to the control of the soybean aphid via integration strategies of chemical and biological (predation and parasitism) controls by fuzzy rule-based systems. This research project aims to apply this model to control of the soybean aphid - Aphis glycines (Hemiptera: Aphididae). On the one hand, the soybean aphid has still not found in Brazil. Therefore, before any eventual invasion, a predictive model to enhance control program is desirable. On the other hand, the soybean aphid has become the most devastating insect pest of soybeans in the United States, and it remains the most significant soybean insect pest in the North Central Region of the USA, i.e., control modeling of national and international concern. Currently, the main problem for the soybean crops in Brazil is the phytophagous bug, stands out the brown stink bug - Euschistus heros (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). For this reason, we intend to apply this model to control of the brown stink bug in soybean crop, and can later be expanded to control pests in other crops such as cotton, corn, sugar cane. Soybean is considered the main crop in Brazilian agribusiness. Brazil is the second-largest exporter of soybean at present, after the USA and before Argentina. According to the Bureau of Agriculture of the USA, it has been estimated that Brazil will be the largest soybean exporter in 2023. In order to reduce the use of insecticides in plantation and efficiency in the pest, this project proposes the control of the soybean aphid via integration strategies of chemical and biological controls, once in FAPESP process 2016/04299-9, we have proposed an optimal chemical control to soybean aphid by fuzzy linear programming and a fuzzy optimal chemical control via Fuzzy Transforms.
