Use of nanotechnology in the development of vaccines against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in pigs

Abstract

Pig production in Brazil has undergone intense modifications and evolutions that aim to meet the world market's demands and increase its competitiveness compared to other animal protein production segments. In addition to this, intensifying production measures have been adopted, with increased animal density being one of the main allies in this evolution. However, together with the intensification of production, more and more challenges arise, interfering in the productive system, such as the emerging of respiratory diseases. Therefore, great attention has been paid to strategies for controlling these diseases due to their high occurrence and the damage these diseases can cause in specialized swine production systems, such as Enzootic Pneumonia (EP) caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. The present study aims to implement a new technology for pig immunization to control EP. The proposal for EP consists of enhancing the protective effect of commercial vaccines by combining the conventional intramuscular immunization protocol with an oral and an injectable vaccine consisting of a carrier adjuvant (SBA-15 silica) associated with a pool of M. hyopneumoniae immunogenic proteins, which will be absorbed and processed by the cells of the lymphoid tissues of the intestinal mucosa and will sensitize cells from distant mucous sites, mainly in the respiratory tract. To this end, two studies will be carried out, one with injectable formulation and one with oral formulation. Physical, clinical, and immunological parameters will be evaluated before and after immunizations and after the health challenge with M. hyopneumoniae, allowing a complete assessment of each vaccine formulation's protective potential.
