Abstract

This project consists of theoretical, numerical and experimental investigation of diffusion flames established by fuel ejection from a porous cylindrical burner in the middle of two impinging jets of air. This new burner configuration allows the control of air transport to the flame, a process known as entrainment. The greater the entrainment, the greater the transport of air to the flame, the smaller the flame and there is a reduction in soot formation. The development of this work demands: (i) project (based on analytical conclusions and numerical simulations) and construction of an experimental configuration; (ii) characterization of frozen flow and (iii) reactive flow; (iv) determination of geometric properties of the flame; (v) measurement of flame temperature; (vi) soot concentration and (vii) numerical simulations. Temperature and soot concentration will be measured by the technique of thin-filament pyrometry (TFP), a method originally developed and used in Astronomy. It is noteworthy that the idea of this configuration arose with this research group, which reinforces its originality. In the past four years, the group has been working on this new combustion configuration on a fundamental level, and has carried out experimental exploratory studies with its own resources over the last two years to check the feasibility of the project.
