Abstract

The Collaborating Center in Animal Health, housed at the Department of Preventive Veterinary Medicine and Animal Health (VPS) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FMVZ) of the University of São Paulo (USP), was created in 2003 and comprises the 3 Laboratories: Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Bacterial Zoonoses and Food Hygiene.This structure has been collaborating with the Department of Animal Health of the brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) since 2002 (Technical Cooperation Agreement MAPA-USP published in DOU 1/1/2003), providing technical and scientific support for National Program for the Control and Eradication of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (PNCEBT), for which it has coordinated studies on the epidemiological situation of the two diseases and developed projects aimed at improving surveillance systems. At the same time, several technicians from MAPA and from the Official Veterinary Services of the states have produced master's dissertations, doctoral theses and developed post-doctoral programs based on these activities.Thus, the present project continues this initiative, aiming to generate high-quality epidemiological and economic indicators to scientifically support health decision-making and the implementation of public policies within the scope of the PNCEBT.The main problems that affect the PNCEBT today and that this project intends to solve are: 1) lack of economic evaluations; 2) need to verify the effectiveness of control actions implemented by some states (SP and PR); 3) lack of information on the pattern of spread of bovine tuberculosis in Brazil; 4) lack of simple and efficient protocols for direct diagnosis of bovine tuberculosis to support a strategy for detecting infected herds applicable to the Brazilian productive environment; 5) uncertainties surrounding the implementation of a Surveillance System for bovine brucellosis in the Brazilian productive environment.
