Abstract

Many of the physical mechanisms verified in nature and technological applications come from fluid-structure interaction. There are different examples of fluid-structure interaction, ranging from fish swimming to the operation of a wind turbine. Thus, a better understanding of the physics of fluid-structure interaction allows advances in elucidating scientific questions and in developing new engineering applications. The goal of this project is to investigate the phenomena related to fluid-structure interaction in the flow of a Newtonian fluid around rough bodies underground effect. From the scientific point of view, the study of this problem allows the broadening of the understanding of the physical details that govern the phenomena of boundary layer separation, vortex structure detachment and boundary layer transition. From a practical point of view, this understanding is reflected in the design of more efficient machines; as an example, one could mention the possibility of extract more energy from a wind farm from the optimization of turbine blades, as well as the understanding of typical operating situations such as the influence of particle accumulation on the blade surface in the machine performance. The analyses will be conducted using the discrete vortex method, a Lagrangian numerical technique that discretizes the vorticity field using discrete Lamb vortices and accompanying them throughout the numerical simulation. The method has advantages for the type of simulation proposed in this work, such as the mesh generation avoidance, the easy adaptation of the method to include simulations of LES turbulence and the possibility of focusing only on regions where important outflow activities take place, i.e., where vorticity is present.
