Synthesis of nanostructured copper and silver complexes for replacement of growth-promoting antibiotics in swine and poultry production

Abstract

The productive sector of animal proteins is growing rapidly. Poultry and pork are cheaper sources of protein when compared to beef, contributing to reduce food insecurity through the population's access to meat products. In addition, the sector offers millions of jobs to diverse people. The success of swine and poultry production has been vastly enhanced by the provision of antimicrobial agents in therapeutic underdoses, known as growth-promoting antibiotics (APC). However, the use of antibiotics in this way can lead to microbial resistance and it is estimated that by 2050 microbial resistance will be the leading cause of death in the world, therefore, a ban on APC is an inevitable path. As alternative additives to APC are rare on the market, and the vast majority do not have the same effectiveness in preventing diseases and promoting growth, nanostructured composites based on copper and silver were developed in Phase I of this project, as they have great potential for the replacement of APCs in pork and poultry production. Since the viability of the synthesis and antimicrobial action of these nanostructured composites was confirmed on a laboratory scale by the results of Phase I of this project, it is proposed in Phase II to obtain these composites on a pilot scale (semi-industrial) and to evaluate the technical feasibility of these applications, through in vivo evaluations of efficacy, safety and residues in poultry and pigs.
