Abstract

The research intends to discuss the current elements and dilemmas existing in a field of knowledge that is concerned with sounds, sonorities and listening. The central focus is to deepen the research and debates that contribute to the understanding, perhaps, of a new territory of historiographical knowledge with its own theoretical, methodological and thematic concerns. The proposal is to delimit the research around the concept of sound culture and how its different forms were manifested in the beginning of the 20th century in the new urban centers under construction in this period. In this way, the investigation will focus on the identification of the practices of the new sound culture in cities such as São Paulo, with the aim of making an inventory of them, understanding the conflicts experienced in the period and the social and political tensions developed in order to organize them, and discipline them. The perspective will be that of historians concerned with listening to the past and the ways of accessing/listening to it, and with the processes of production of historical knowledge that have sounds, noises and listening as central axes. This discussion has been carried out by the members and researchers of the Research Group Between memory and the history of music (www.memoriadamusica.com.br), with specific research on sounds, sonorities and the various dimensions of music. In this way, the objective is to expand the collective discussions that exist there, developing new research and themes in an integrated way, having the central research as the axis. (AU)
