Violence against women in the context of COVID-19: the reported cases

Abstract

Violence against women by an intimate partner is not a recent phenomenon in society, and social isolation is a factor that is directly related to this phenomenon. In the context of the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) measures such as social isolation can have a direct impact on women, increasing their vulnerability to intimate partner violence. The objective of this study is to investigate the situations and cases of violence against women in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, to investigate the cases of women who suffered intimate partner violence and formalized a police report, and to know the experience of women in the period of social isolation and the motivations that led women to file complaints during the period of social isolation. The investigation comprises two stages: 1) survey and data analysis of all police reports issued in a specialized Police Station in the municipality of Botucatu/SP, during the pandemic period from March 1, 2020 to October 31, 2020, totaling eight (8) months and 2) After the characterization and identification of the women who filed a police report (first step), in-depth interviews will be conducted with some of these women, based on guiding questions, to know the experience of women with intimate partner violence in the period of social isolation.
