Abstract

GreenCities is a new multidisciplinary partnership between the UK and Brazil. The collaboration focuses on key knowledge gaps in our understanding of how urban greenspace provides cooling in humid tropical regions. It builds on world-leading Brazilian expertise in urban eddy covariance monitoring and UK expertise in ecosystem services modelling and citizen science engagement. This partnership will allow us to develop new models for urban cooling relevant across the humid tropics to extend the capability of tools available in the UK, and which can support urban planning to improve human health and wellbeing under climate change. This demonstration case will also serve as the building block to develop further research on interactions between heat fluxes and air pollutants, and the role (and limitations) of greenspace in mitigating those combined pressures.
