Organic zinc supplementation and its association with the additive sodium butyrate, aiming to improve the performance and health of suckling calves

Abstract

The project aims to study organic zinc supplementation and its association with sodium butyrate in the inflammatory profile and oxidative stress, in the development and structure of intestinal villi, as well as in ruminal papillae and ruminal fermentation, in the bioavailability of nutrients, in the control of infectious processes, ingestive behavior and the performance of calves in the lactation phase. The experiment will be carried out at the experimental farm of the Instituto de Zootecnia de Ribeirão Preto / SP using 48 Holstein newborn male calves up to 64 experimental days, allocated in a randomized block design (age), submitted to the following treatments: C = control (no supplementation); ZnS= supplementation of 80 mg/kg of dry matter (DM) of organic zinc in the milk substitute; BC = 3 g/kg DM supplementation in the basal diet of sodium butyrate in the concentrate and ZnSBC = supplementation of 80 mg/kg of dry matter (DM) of organic zinc in the replacer and 3 g/kg of DM in the basal diet of sodium butyrate in the concentrate. The performance will be assessed, in the blood analyzed ²-hydroxybutyrate, complete blood count, lactate, lactate dehydrogenase, zinc and copper, apparent digestibility, nitrogen balance, zinc, and copper. After 17 days of supplementation, calves will be challenged with Lipopolysaccharides from Escherichia coli and tested for enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase, and analysis of the inflammatory profile, analyzing acute phase proteins (IgA, ceruloplasmin, transferrin, albumin, alpha1-antitrypsin, haptoglobin, alpha1-glycoprotein acid and IgG). There will also be a morphometric study of the intestine, rumen, and rumen fermentation parameters, ingestive behavior and infection control. Organic zinc and sodium butyrate supplements have different actions in the animal organism, zinc helping the immune system and butyrate helping the digestive system and it is expected that the combination of these may result in a set of actions in the metabolism of calves, improving lactation productivity of calves.
