Biodiversity in the Anthropocene: a synthesis on the effect of agriculture expansion within Cerrado and Atlantic Forest

Abstract

We aim to investigate the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on biodiversity and ecosystem services. São Paulo state has a long history of human occupation; by other side, Goiás state actually is one of the main agrobusiness frontiers in Brazil, and has a recent human occupation history. Therefore, the comparison about the effects of agroecosystems on biodiversity and ecosystem services on these two regions can contribute for the better understanding about the influences of anthropogenic based disturbances; moreover, can guide management, conservation and restoration strategies. Although studies have been published about the influence of landscape on Atlantic Forest, only a few have been done on Cerrado. In addition, almost none study compared these biomes or conducted multi-taxa analysis at multiple scales. Here we propose to contribute with an in deep understanding about how habitat loss, fragmentation and anthropogenic matrix immerse in agroecosystems can affect communities and species. Moreover, we also propose to integrate genetic, ecological and social data for understand the drivers of biodiversity in the Anthropocene. (AU)
