Abstract

To guarantee the quality of inland aquatic systems and promote strategies for water security at a drainage basin scale, it is necessary to understand the sources of pollutants, determine their locations and analyze the possible risks that these sources can cause to natural systems. In the present project, we focus on the Paraíba do Norte river basin as the unit of planning and management of our actions. The objective is to assess the structure and functioning of this basin as well as the main impacts of human activities and propose measures to mitigate pollution, seeking answers for conservation and socio-environmental and economic sustainability. The proposal is to maintain a comprehensive and integrative vision in the execution of high-level research in a) water resources and water governance; b) biomonitoring, conservation, and sustainable use of aquatic biodiversity; c) use of geoengineering techniques aiming at an ecologically and economically viable approach to improving water quality; and d) qualified training of professionals who can work on the proposed themes, as well as strengthen research networks between the states of Paraíba and São Paulo. It is expected that these actions will contribute to the knowledge and assessment of the complexity of environmental processes, helping to promote the conservation and management of ecosystems and to analyze trends, perspectives, and scenarios that can be applied at the watershed level.
