Interhemispheric monsoon precipitation patterns under different warming backgrounds in the past 140 KA and the anthropocene epoch

Abstract

The groups from University of São Paulo (USP) and Xi'an Jiaotong University are expert in paleoclimate reconstruction based on the speleothem stable isotope records. The joint research by these groups based in China and Brazil are highly complementary because they have produced most of speleothem records from South America, East Asia and India monsoons and when combined can bring a unique opportunity to evaluate the connection among climatic periods and events with different frequencies and forcing. Their joint research has given a major contribution to the establishment of interhemispheric precipitation patterns associated with the global monsoon regime. This research proposal aims not only to improve the paleo-precipitation reconstruction in South America and China but also the comparison with isotope data from new methodology to reconstruct the paleotemperatures by using fluid inclusion and monsoon circulation and regional precipitation variations by analyzing stable isotope (d18O-d13C and 17Oex) for the last 140.000 years. This data will be combined with trace elements (X/Ca) multi-proxies and numerical simulation, in order to clarify the controlling factors of East Asian and South American monsoon changes under different warming backgrounds, and predict the impact of global warming on future of global monsoon changes. The result from this research can be highly relevant to test the performance of the climatic models General Circulation Models to reproduce the physical processes in the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and land surface for simulating the response of the global climate system to different scenarios with contrasting natural temperature changes and under increasing greenhouse gas concentrations. In addition, this research project between FAPESP and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), will make possible fully laboratory training for young researchers and technicians as well as to share analytical procedures and skills. It will create means to extend this collaboration to a deeper and longer stage project that will involve the production of a network of high-resolution and well-dated paleoclimate records that could be used to reconstruct the climate with great confidence.
