Strengthening the production chains of babaçu, buriti, and Brazil nut through the sustainable production of protein concentrates, oils, and bioactive peptides

Abstract

The Amazon rainforest has an invaluable wealth of fauna and flora. However, the vertiginous deforestation of the last ten years threatens this natural heritage of humanity. Logging, livestock, mining, and soy planting are the protagonists of deforestation. Although soy dominates the field of plant-based products (plant-based), an alternative protein source to animal protein, the search for new raw materials is highlighted. Babassu, buriti and Brazil nut are non-timber forest products (NTFP), which have considerable protein content and are a source of income for Amazonian families. Based on the sustainable management of these fruits, it is possible to strengthen the production chains of extractive reserves and contribute to reducing deforestation since they are Amazonian fruits. Therefore, this proposal addresses efforts to meet the North Axis III: Promoting the strengthening of sustainable production chains in the Amazon. Through the partnerships established between the institutions USP, IFAM, UFPI, EMBRAPA, specialists, private companies and the Secretariat of Economic Development of Piauí, the objective is to map the productive and deforestation areas of babassu, buriti and Brazil nut. , produce and characterize protein concentrates, seek certification of products and by-products from regulatory bodies, generate bioactive peptides that are potential nutraceutical agents, and train members of extractive cooperatives for sustainable management. The implementation of this proposal will make it possible to contribute to the nutritional profile of these foods, invest in the sustainable management of NTFPs, increase productivity, add value and provide greater economic and social returns to the Amazonian peoples.
