Sports participation and markers of bone density, geometry and architecture of adolescents: ABCD Growth Study

Abstract

To analyze the impact of engaging in sports activities on changes in bone health markers in adolescents of both sexes. Methods: A longitudinal study with a 12-month follow-up, in which at least 202 adolescents of both sexes and age between 11 and 17 years will be evaluated. As outcomes, blood parameters of bone remodeling, bone density, geometry and microarchitecture will be considered. Sports participation will be the independent variable, in which adolescents will be stratified into: 1- Control group, 2- Swimming Group and 3- Impact Sports Group (athletics, basketball, baseball, artistic gymnastics and field tennis). As adjustment variables, gender, age, biological maturation, ethnicity, sleep quality, physical activity, nutritional, hormonal and inflammatory variables will be considered. The statistical analysis will be essentially composed of analysis of covariance, with measures of effect size (eta-squared). Expected results: It is expected to identify if sports participation is able to boost the natural bone mass gain that occurs during adolescence, and, if so, it is expected to identify through which pathways the sport can promote bone health (hormonal or structural).
