Abstract

Herbaria and their components (exsiccates, xylaria, fruit collections, spirit collections and samples preserved in silica gel) play a central role in biological research, providing the basis for studies way beyond Taxonomy, since several areas of science demand high quality data that may be obtained from biological collections. Access to the massive amount of records from herbaria representing the Neotropical biodiversity has grown, and these data have been extensively used in research during the past decades, providing the basis for improved knowledge and conservation of the super diverse Neotropical flora, and establishing the foundation for spatial analyses at different spatial scales. The five herbaria from São Paulo State enrolled in this research project are among the largest in southeastern Brazil, and they contribute to a representative portion of the Brazilian scientific production, as well as to the formation of a high number of botanists. However, there are several gaps in sampling efforts along the Brazilian territory, and the process of making herbarium collections available online is still incomplete, demanding further field activities and efforts towards improvement of the data available on virtual repositories, which will allow new studies on broader scales.
