History of exhumation of the South American plataform in the Southeastern Brazil: thermochronology by fission track analysis and ar/ar and sm/nd systematics

Abstract

The project history of exhumation of the South American Platform in the southeastern Brazil: thermochronology by fission track analysis and ar/ar and sm/nd systematics intends, among other things, to reconstruct the last 250 million years of exhumation history of the upper crust along southeastern part of the South American Plataform, southeastern Brazil, between the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. This exhumation history is related, in part, to the fragmentation of the Supercontinent Pangea and the subsequent tectonic responses of the platform in the continental and plataformal areas in the mentioned period of time. A reconstruction of the thermal, tectonic and geomorphological histories will be done. The transport sense between sources and recent basins will be accomplished starting from the analysis of the uplift processes of source areas and sedimentation in correlative basins. Parameters such as heating, uplift/subsidence, tectonics and erosion of Precambrian units during this interval of time will be the main aspects of this investigation. For the study of the thermal history we will use different thermochronometers: 4OAr/39Ar for micas (with closing temperature of ~300 oC); Fission Track Methods for zircon (closing temperature of ~230 oC) and apatite (closing temperature of ~ 120 oC). The analysis of fission tracks in epidote will be done in samples associated with brittle tectonics and used in the interpretation of the thermal histories. Determinations of source areas and transport sense it will be done using Sm/Nd studies of potential source rocks and in chronocorrelated sedimentary deposits, being complemented with fission tracks in apatite and zircon starting from the method of the external detector.A comprehensive field study will be supported by geological, tectonic and geomorphologic criteria. The data will be used to analyze grouping criteria of samples with similar geological characteristics. With the above methodologies we will have enough elements to understand the effects of the Pangea fragmentation along the South American margin associated to the uplifting of the Serra do Mar, Canastra and Mantiqueira mountain ranges and chronocorrelative sedimentary basins. In this sense it will also test the evolution of the associated topographic relief of the Atlantic Ocean opening and the recent history of the Southeast Brazilian coast. The results obtained will have scientific and economic importance in terms of understanding the uplift phenomena and deposition of sediments in the adjacent basins, possibly, related to the formation of coastal basins (basins of Santos and Campos), associated with oil fields, and interior basins (Bauru, and younger), related to diamond deposits, gold and hydrothermal ores, among others. The results obtained can also be important in planning the construction of dams, highways and planning of cities. Technological results will be registered (patented) through the development of fission track methodology in zircon and epidoto, possibly with patent, and routine implementation of the thermochronology methodologies for fission tracks in apatite and of Ar/Ar and Sm/Nd geochronology. Specialized workers will be obtained through bachelors, masters, doctors and technical, using single or integrated techniques. To accomplish this project we have assembled a multidisciplinary team with specialists from the following institutions: UNESP, UNICAMP, USP, UFMT, UnG, IPEN and IPT of Brazil; IGGI-Pisa and Univ. Pavia of Italy and IPEN/Lima of Peru. This team will develop the research using faculty, post-doctoral researchers, graduate (master, and doctoral), undergraduate students and it will count on the aid from various technicians. (AU)
