Abstract

Graphene-derived materials are considered emergent materials in various areas of Analytical Chemistry. Graphene, an allotropic variety of carbon, presents a planar network of electrons in its chemical structure that participates into À -bonds, being the main responsible for the graphene-based sorbent interactions with several compounds belonging to different chemical classes. These characteristics made these materials selective, particularly to molecules having aromatic groups. That behavior is also present in graphene-derived materials such as graphene oxide (GO), which also presents oxygen-containing groups on their surface, allowing the sorption of other materials having different functional groups. Furthermore, the addition of aliphatic groups - such as octadecyl (C18), hydrophilic groups, hydrophobic and or zwitterionic groups as in the case of some ionic liquids (ILs) - to the graphite sheets makes those sorbents even more attractive to be used in a broader range of chemical functionalities. Another modification involves the fixation of graphene-derived materials into silica particles' surface (forming SiGO), making their packing easier into extraction cartridges, analytical chromatographic columns, and other devices. This project aims to expand the current information about graphene-derived materials used as extraction phases in sample preparation micro techniques, both offline and online, and as stationary phases in capillary liquid chromatography. A particular emphasis will be on end-capped functionalized SiGO phases containing C18 groups (producing SiGO-C18) and novel ionic liquids (ILs) as GO modifiers. (AU)
