Abstract

Characteristics and lifestyle habits, such as cardiovascular risk factors (CRF) and physical activity practice can develop in childhood and adolescence. Among the environments that can contribute to these outcomes is the family. However, it is not clear whether the relationship between CRF between parents and children can be mitigated by physical activity and whether the practice in different domains [work (parents) and school (children); leisure and active commuting) and intensities (light, moderate and vigorous) of physical activity between parents and children would be related. General objective: To analyze the relationship between CRF (diastolic and systolic blood pressure; cardiac autonomic modulation) between parents and children and to verify if possible relationships can be mitigated by different intensities of physical activity. Specific objectives: i) To analyze whether different adiposity indicators (BMI, waist circumference and fat percentage) are related between parents and children; ii) To analyze the relationship between the different domains and intensities of physical activity between parents and children. Methods: At least 176 participants [88 children and/or adolescents and 88 adults (at least one parent)] will be evaluated. Blood pressure and resting heart rate will be assessed by an oscillometric device and cardiac autonomic modulation through heart rate variability. Anthropometric indicators: BMI, waist circumference and fat percentage will be evaluated using a scale and stadiometer, inextensible measuring tape and Dual Energy X-ray Absorbometry (DEXA), respectively. The physical activity domains will be evaluated through a questionnaire and the intensities through accelerometry. Implications: The results of this study will serve to clarify the relationship between CRF and physical activity between parents and children, as well as whether the practice of physical activity can mitigate possible associations. These results may help in the development of health promotion strategies and guide such actions in the family environment. (AU)
