Abstract

In this project, we propose the development of solid knowledge and resulting prototyping device technology based on the functionalization of solution-processed 2D materials (2DMs) and their integration "on chip" for chemical sensing and biosensing. The use of 2DMs present unique advantages for this purpose, such as i) high surface-to-volume ratio, which make them very sensitive to environmental perturbations; ii) adjustable electrical properties, which guarantees flexibility during the device operation; and iii) inherent structural defects that can be usefully functionalized via defect engineering. Solution processability allows the production of 2DM "inks" which are compatible with industrial scalable manufacturing methods, enabling device prototyping. Here, by the ad hoc functionalization of solution-processed 2DMs with chemical and biochemical recognition elements (viz., functional molecules and biomolecules), we will develophighly sensitive and selective sensors and biosensors using transducers based on electrolytegated transistors. As kick-off applications, we will develop point-of-care (PoC) sensors and biosensors beyond proof-of-concept and with applicability in healthcare. For chemical sensing, we envisage the detection of metal cations (K+, Na+, Ca2+, e Mg2+) in physiological samples, such as saliva, sweat, urine and blood, whose concentration can be directly correlated to several pathologies. For biosensing, we aim for the monitoring of antibodies related to autoimmune inflammatory pathologies, such as rheumatoid arthritis. By tackling these two initial applications, we intend to demonstrate how inherent defects of 2DMs can be functionalized to develop novelPoC (bio)sensors endowed of high sensitivity, selectivity, and with real potential for prototyping and commercialization.
