Abstract

The Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) is a structured interview designed to reliably identify psychiatric disorders in epidemiological studies. The heterogeneity of estimates obtained through CIDI in different locations and populations suggests this variability could be a reflection of cultural difference or an artifact introduced by methodological diversity. In order to obtain accurate and comparable epidemiological data, recent protocols for the translation and adaptation of psychometric instruments have recommended rigorous methods capable of generating superior quality results, in different linguistic and sociocultural settings. Our goal is to translate CIDI version 5.0 through the team translation model (TRAPD: Translation, Review, Adjudication, Pilot test and Documentation) and adapt it to Brazilian Portuguese through cognitive interviews and focus groups. Unlike the traditional method of translation and back-translation, the TRAPD model follows the team approach, where the multidisciplinary effort of scientists is coordinated to translate, revise and adjudicate the translation of the instrument. Detailed documentation of all these steps aims at a proper quality control. During the pre-test phase, the understanding of the instrument by culturally heterogeneous subjects will be evaluated through qualitative approaches in order to propose relevant adaptations. This innovative project uses current best practices to obtain the translation and adaptation of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of an important instrument used worldwide. Once the project is finished, the road to epidemiological studies is opened with a tool that can be applied on a large scale, adapted to our sociolinguistic context, while allowing international and cross-cultural comparability.
