Abstract
The correlation between natural conditions and human intervention places Brazil among the countries in which floods are recurrent and affect different segments of society. It is essential that the different political-administrative spheres (federal, state and municipal) and the bodies that act on the direct scale of the occurrence of events, such as the Hydrographic Basin Committees and the Civil Defense, carry out joint actions in order to minimize the impacts on the most vulnerable social segments. Thus, it is essential that studies on floods focus on a geographic approach, and the key concept to be considered is that of landscape. Therefore, geographic science, having the geographic space as its object of analysis, makes it possible, under a critical eye, to carry out integrated environmental studies, in order to provide technical and scientific support for the elaboration of studies that include the phenomenon of floods in the actions management of water resources, being included in public policies, contributing to planning and decision-making. Considering the above, this project proposes to analyze the phenomenon of floods from multiple analytical methodologies, in order to assist the public authorities in the creation and implementation of prevention, mitigation and response measures and to subsidize the creation of the Brazilian Flood Observatory . To meet the proposed objective, this project intends to characterize the areas susceptible to flooding and measure the frequency of the phenomenon in each studied site; to trace the sociodemographic profile of the population exposed to the risk of flooding in the study areas; create an index of social vulnerability, susceptibility and risks for each of the areas under study.
