Abstract

In most eukaryotes, the mitochondrial respiratory complexes, ATP synthase, and mitoribosome are genetic hybrids encoded by nuclear and mitochondrial genes. An emerging area of mitochondrial research seeks to decipher mechanisms by which these genetic, hetero-oligomeric hybrids are coordinately formed achieving optimal stoichiometry between them. In recent years, this laboratory has contributed to the identification of new factors and mechanisms that lead to the regulated and balanced expression of the components of these mitochondrial protein complexes. This project seeks to delve deeper into the characterization of these factors, in addition to as yet uncharacterized Saccharomyces cerevisiae genes that point to intersections with other spheres of mitochondrial metabolism.
