Multi-user equipment approved in grant 2017/27131-9: iSeq 100 system

Abstract

The thematic project with which the EMU in question is associated (#2017/27131-9) requires a genomic sequencing platform to achieve the following scientific objectives: (i) quickly analyze the genomic composition of the bioluminescent and fluorescent pathogens developed or used in the project; (ii) sequence the viruses identified in population studies developed at SPPU, such as the Influenza A, SARS-CoV-2, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, and others; (iii) the genomic data produced will be fundamental to integrate them with the metadata associated with the samples, such as clinical, spatial, immunological, pathological and molecular data; and (iv) identify new targets for the development of preventive, diagnostic/prognostic and therapeutic methods based on the target viruses of our study. We have sought well-integrated goals, covering fundamental aspects and innovation perspectives related to infections caused by viral agents, particularly those that present RNA molecules as their genetic material. Considering this context, the Scientific Platform Pasteur-USP is developing a network of multi-user equipment, which we intend to acquire and incorporate into this network equipment not available in facilities close to the SPPU, and which are essential to the development of the scientific strategy. In addition to the standard molecular biology equipment in our laboratory, such as thermocyclers, qubits, laminar flows, and transluminators, we seek to improve our ability to generate and analyze genomic data, especially concerning viruses, efficiently and accurately. In this context, we highlight the importance of the iSeq 100 system. Illumina's iSeq 100 device offers robustness and reliability in various applications. Its advantage lies in the combination of fast, accurate (99.9%), and cost-effective next-generation sequencing (NGS) performance, making it essential to meet our needs. Furthermore, its low cost and requirement for reduced bench space are significant differentiators. With the ability to generate 1.2 GB of data per run in less than 18 hours, the iSeq 100 provides flexibility by allowing you to combine different libraries in a single run. This characteristic makes the device ideal for the efficient generation of viral genomic data, thus contributing to the acceleration and improvement of our analyses. (AU)
