Abstract

Knowledge about the way institutions are built is fundamental to creating effective governance systems for tackling global environmental problems, such as climate change and biodiversity. This CEPID will advance knowledge about governance and management related to global environmental changes at the different levels to develop new concepts and approaches for understanding how to build national and local solutions to those problems. The CEPID could lead to the development of new management tools and governance mechanisms to spur solutions to global environmental problems on different scales. It will support the long-term strategy of Brazil in becoming a leading basis for disseminating the knowledge about those solutions and being internationally recognized for its innovative approaches to research and teaching. The CEPID will bring together the researchers in the area of management and economics that complement each other in academic focus and research approaches. It will produce cutting edge academic research, but also connect the results to the policy debates of global environmental issues around the world by designing its research and outputs to influence policy and organizational processes. The CEPID will be connected to existing applied research centers in FGV. The team is well-positioned to diffuse the research to where it will be useful in decision making in organizations and governments. In addition, the work of the program will be assessed by a high-quality international steering committee to provide regular assessments to guarantee the academic quality of the program. The CEPID will leverage its intellectual resources to create a strong academic hub but also strengthen a globally top-ranked think-tank, such as FGV, in a new field by linking up with relevant organizations and networks in academia and practice at the international, national and local level. Besides delivering high quality research and teaching, the CEPID will strive to enhance its capacity for knowledge management, research synthesis, training, advice and information services to support policy-making, knowledge diffusion and knowledge transfer to society. Knowledge management means not only producing cutting edge research, but also understanding the main global environmental governance debates and selecting key research outcomes to influence policy. The team and supporting institutions at FGV using its existing links and capacity for policy influence are well-positioned to leverage FGV's legitimacy as an independent well-networked organization to diffuse research results to where it will be useful for decision making in Brazil and elsewhere.Networking will be a crucial activity for the CEPID, as it is also at the heart of co-production of knowledge building in governance and management studies. The CEPID will connect to a wide range of existing programs in other universities, academic associations, UN agencies, international organizations, governments, universities, NGOs and think-tanks. The CEPID should also be coupled with existing networks of knowledge generation and policy to generate cutting edge research that can be helpful to solve practical problems in the public and private sectors.
