Abstract

This project aims to develop and implement a biodegradable polyurethane foam for surfboards, driven by the environmental impacts associated with the production and disposal of water sports equipment. This initiative is carried out in partnership with the company that holds the patent and manufacturer of the material, as well as board manufacturers (potential customers) and established distributors in the market. Initial samples of approximately three liters have already been produced, and it is now crucial to test the full-size application to optimize the physicochemical characteristics to meet market demands. The project's central innovation lies in replacing polyurethane (PU) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) with this new biodegradable material, resulting in significant environmental benefits and better waste management. After the development and establishment of the manufacturing process, as well as market validation in terms of cost, performance and behavior, a significant reduction in the use of conventional materials is expected. Furthermore, exporting the product becomes viable. In the future, there is potential to expand the water sports product portfolio, further extending its positive impact on the environment and global sustainability. (AU)
