Abstract

Atmospheric and Solar phenomena such as the Madden Julian Oscillation, Quasi-Biennial Oscillation and solar magnetic cycles have dramatic socio-economic-environmental impacts. Typically, the mechanisms behind such phenomena involve turbulent processes with multiple spatial andtime scales, making them difficult to understand and predict. Advances in the understandingof the mechanism that govern these phenomena depend upon the symbiosis between statisticalanalysis of observational data, rigorous analysis of idealized models, and numerical solutions ofthe equations that govern them. This is a multi-disciplinary project in the interface between applied mathematics, atmosphericsciences and solar physics that aims to explore the aforementioned phenomena with a unifyingapproach, with particular focus on the role of nonlinearity, the emergence of coherent structuresand the excitation of low frequency oscillations. To achieve this goal, we will employ techniquesfrom dynamical systems, partial differential equations, Hamiltonian mechanics, numerical analysis and physics informed machine learning methods.Particular problems that will be addressed in this project are: (i) the role of the interaction ofdifferent equatorial atmospheric waves in the onset of the Madden-Julian Oscillation, (ii) the role of solar Rossby waves in space weather, its instabilities and nonlinear interactions, (iii) the role of solar forcing in the excitation stratospheric waves and their effects on the troposphere. The project will be developed in collaboration with national and international collaboratorsthat are experts in the fields of nonlinear waves/turbulence, numerical analysis, atmosphericdynamics, solar physics. Given the multidisciplinary nature of the project, we also hope to contribute to the training of students through courses and mentorin (AU)
