Clinical aspects of new and current users of long-acting reversible contraceptives (intrauterine devices and implants) and once-a-month injectable contraceptives

Abstract

In Brazil exist a paradox. Almost 78% of women aged 15 and 49 years married or in union sometimes are users of modern contraceptives. However, the unplanned pregnancy rate is almost 55% of all pregnancies. This situation contributes to the high number of unsafe abortions and the increase of maternal morbimortality. Despite these figures, research in contraception in Brazil is restricted to few research groups because apparently for researchers this is not a priority issue. At the Family planning outpatient clinic of UNICAMP, we constituted a group of researchers with a large time experience in teaching, research and clinical assistance in Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine in Brazil, with well respect at national and international level and we are the most solid group of research in contraception in Brazil in the last 40 years. To increase the research capacity, the World Health Organization have been established a hub for Latin American countries and those from the Lusophone Africa to receive fellows for master and doctorate courses to work in research related to contraception and sexual and reproductive health (SRH). The UNICAMP´s group has the capacity to propose a joint research and development protocol with impact in benefits to the science, to the country and to the society. Our research group of contraception mainly focus on the main line of research on long-acting reversible contraceptives [LARCs]), contraceptives with non-contraceptive benefits like treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding, endometriosis and adenomyosis. For this reason, our research focus included different parts of the reproductive female cycle of life and prevalent medical conditions with a common influence in metabolic target, bleeding disturbances, and satisfaction. Our research line and associated projects is part of an intensive activity regarding the potential to incorporate substantial improvements at the health science and the knowledge in reproductive medicine, but also in the translation of our results to regional and national policies of promotion of women health. It is important to take into account that beside the scientific research stricto sensu, studies with population data, projects associated to public secretariat of health, research with vulnerable women like those with heavy menstrual bleeding among others could allow us to maintain a great interlocution with the public sector and the society.
