SUSTAINABLE PLANNING OF POWER DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS WITH ENERGY COMMUNITIES IN THE CONTEXT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Abstract

In recent years, many countries have experienced more intense and frequent heat waves and cold fronts associated with greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Adopting less polluting and more sustainable energy sources is crucial, especially in forming energy communities to produce and share renewable energy, reducing CO2 emissions, and improving energy efficiency. These communities enable better utilization of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) such as photovoltaic systems, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging stations. Energy communities significantly benefit consumers and utilities in extensive distribution networks with high DER penetration. This project will develop stochastic optimization models to plan the expansion of power distribution networks, leveraging the formation of energy communities with DER and minimizing the costs of new installations and connections, considering uncertainties related to DER, electricity demand, and climate change. The results will aid distribution utility in promoting sustainable development in urban areas. (AU)
