Abstract

The project "New Energy Generation and Storage: bringing technological development to the country" encompasses the research and extension activities of three CINE phase 2 programs from 2023 to 2028: Energy Generation (EG), Advanced Energy Energy (Advanced Energy Storage, AES) and Green Hydrogen Generation (GH2).The project is part of CINE's mission, which is the development of national technologies in the area of new energies, focusing on the energy transition environment the country is going through, with the commitment to an economy with low carbon emissions. All projects have as their objective a careful look at the country's electricity matrix, which is currently 83% renewable. The advance mainly in the expansion of photovoltaic energy that recently surpassed wind energy and both should assume the leading role in clean electricity generation in the world in 10-15 years, which justifies the creation of the EG program. The GH2 program brings to CINE the agenda for the generation of green hydrogen, which has become one of the main energy transport vectors in the next 10-15 years. Electric mobility and stationary energy storage are guidelines of the AES program brought about by recent discussions on how Brazil and the world will deal with the transport of cargo and passengers, as well as incorporating a greater share of wind and photovoltaic energy in the electrical grid. All programs cover fundamental studies of the technologies to be approached with a focus on in situ and in operando characterizations using advanced techniques (as is the case of studies that are already being carried out in collaboration with Sirius in Campinas and other laboratories that use synchrotron radiation ). Also planned are the development and improvement of functional materials, such as catalysts, photocatalysts, membranes, support substrates, etc., with a focus on cost reduction, use of local inputs and production, reduction in the use of rare metals and expansion of the use of carbon and derivatives, increased generation efficiency and stability. The expansion of technologies to prototype scale will be carried out in several projects, such as perovskite solar cells, PEM electrolysers, photoelectrochemical cells, batteries and supercapacitors. Part of this upscaling has already started in CINE phase 1 and should be promoted more strongly in phase 2. This will allow many projects that are at TRL 3 technological goal level to move to TRL 4 or 5 in the coming years. (AU)
