Abstract

In this proposal we shall continue our efforts to generate cutting-edge science where fundamental andapplied research will advance together in the field of optics. Our research program comprises three mainthrusts: cold-matter physics, plasmonics and biophotonics, fields that linked by a common theme of lightmatterinteraction. In parallel we shall advance fundamental understanding and develop innovative, practicalapplications. Turbulence in quantum gases, light-matter entanglement of photon and cold atoms, and opticalmethods for precision time-and-frequency metrology define the focus of cold-matter physics.Nanoplasmonics takes optics beyond the diffraction limit, opening new perspectives for confinement andtransport of quantum gases and the development of ultrasensitive, rugged biosensors. In biophotonics, ourstudies focus on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, using purely optical techniques. Technologicalinnovation, benefiting from new scientific insights achieved in the basic research activity, will develop newproducts, establish start-up enterprises, and collaborate with existing companies. The science disseminationand outreach effort employs a TV channel, operating 24 hours per day, with a diverse range of activeprograms covering all educational levels; bringing the excitement of science to students from preschool toadults. Our ambition is to create a world-class, internationally recognized Center. We will promoteinternational exchange and interaction by recruiting talented students and postdoctoral fellows from all overthe world and establishing cooperative agreements with other high-level, globally recognized researchcenters. The funds requested here will not only bring the proposed Center to realization but also serve toleverage more resources from other funding sources. (AU)
