Abstract

The project involves stellar astrophysics, star formation and extragalactic astronomy, based on observations to be carried out on large telescopes and satellites, in the optical, infrared and X-rays. The scientific goals include: (a) high resolution spectroscopy of stars in the Galactic bulge, ultra-metal-poor halo stars and other samples; (b) low resolution spectroscopy for the search of ultra-metal-poor stars, studies of faint stars in the bulge, and stellar populations in the Galaxy; (c) imaging of globular clusters of the bulge, in nearby external galaxies and open clusters; (d) calculations of grids of synthetic spectra for population synthesis and studies of integrated spectra of globular clusters and absorption line galaxies, and regions of star formation. The equipment to be acquired consists of high performance microcomputers, that will be used for calculations and data reductions, in combination with the Compaq-Alpha workstation obtained earlier for the group.
