Advances in Research and International Academic-Scientific Integration between the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and the Ribeirão Preto School of Nursing - USP.

Abstract

The international cooperation will significantly boost projects in the areas of tuberculosis (TB), multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB-MDR), and TB-HIV coinfection, which are the main areas of interest of Prof. Dr. Ricardo Alexandre Arcêncio. Additionally, technological innovation is one of the expected outcomes, considering the expertise of Prof. Dr. Jason E. Farley, a researcher at the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing (JHU-SON) and a world-renowned expert in infectious disease epidemiology and the implementation of digital technologies for TB treatment monitoring. The results and impacts of this proposal will enable the qualification of researchers and students, strengthening teaching, research, and extension activities at the Ribeirão Preto School of Nursing of the University of São Paulo (EERP-USP). A positive impact on healthcare practices is also expected, considering Prof. Farley's experience in advanced nursing practices and public health. Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is globally recognized as the 13th best university according to THE World University Rankings, ranking 9th in the United States. Its prestige is particularly notable in the field of health, leading international initiatives to combat COVID-19. The mission of JHU-SON is to improve the health of individuals and diverse communities globally through leadership, excellence in education, research, and nursing practice. Among the strategic goals outlined in its "Institutional Development Plan," innovation and excellence stand out, focusing on advancing education and evidence-based practice. JHU-SON also aims to strengthen local and global communities by promoting educational and practical partnerships to improve health outcomes and enhance the health workforce. Its graduate programs include the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), the academic PhD, and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), with the latter focusing on advanced clinical practice and research innovations that transform healthcare. Prof. Dr. Jason E. Farley, the visiting researcher of this proposal, is a nurse epidemiologist specializing in infectious diseases, particularly TB and HIV, and holds the inaugural Chair of Leadership and Innovation at JHU-SON. His work focuses on developing digital strategies for monitoring TB treatment, especially in vulnerable populations, and collaborating on international projects in South Africa to address TB-HIV coinfection and antimicrobial resistance. His research is supported by prestigious institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Center for Infectious Disease and Nursing Innovation (CIDNI). His experience in epidemiological modeling, clinical trials, and public health policies will be essential for strengthening applied research at EERP-USP and promoting evidence-based policy formulation. Therefore, the relevance of this proposal for research qualification and human resource development is evident. (AU)
