Abstract

Brazil has shown an increase in the frequency of extreme weather and climate events in recent decades, especially in the last decade. All Brazilian biomes and populations were affected, while those living in susceptible areas as well as indigenous communities suffered the most. For example, disasters triggered by extreme rainfall have been the cause of thousands of deaths, which could have been avoided if society had become resilient to the climate crisis. It is urgent to empower society so that it has the capacity to adapt and, if necessary, transform to acquire resilience in the face of the impacts of the climate crisis. The proposed CEPID (Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center) CLIMARES will have the mission to work on innovation for adaptation and resilience in the face of the climate crisis, disasters and impacts in strategic sectors in Brazil such as food, energy, water and economy. The knowledge acquired by groups and institutions that are part of CLIMARES like INCLINE (in relation to the basic science of climate change), CEPED (in relation to research on hydrological disasters), Rede CLIMA (in relation to research and development of the National Plan for Climate Change), INCT MC1 and MC2 (which implemented and developed a comprehensive interdisciplinary research network on global change, climate crisis and sustainability), CEMADEN (the main center of hydro-geo-meteorological disaster alerts in Latin America) and Amazonia 4.0 project (to demonstrate ways to merge technologies with indigenous' and local communities' knowledge for Amazonia), make CLIMARES unique not only on a national level, but throughout the Americas. Furthermore, the center will be hosted at the IEE (Institute of Energy and Environment) at University of São Paulo, a reference for studies on renewable energy, energy planning and the environment. The center will work on 11 thematic axes that interact and complement each other to achieve its mission, namely: 1) Climate Change and Variability; 2) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management; 3) Energy Transition and Technology; 4) Food Security and Hunger Reduction; 5) Water Security and Adaptive Management; 6) Health Security and Pandemic Risk; 7) Education and Dissemination of Knowledge; 8) Innovation in Climate Intervention; 9) Social Transformation in the Face of Climate Change; 10) Economic Impacts Influenced by the Climate Crisis; and 11) Amazonia: Technological Development and Sustainability. These axes are integrated into the topic of climate change, already show interactions and are supported by well-established ongoing projects by the various groups that are part of this proposal. Interdisciplinarity is guaranteed within this integrative proposal with physical, chemical, biological, socioeconomic and health aspects working together. The coordinators of each thematic axis are renowned researchers active in the area, ensuring that CLIMARES will be developed considering the state of the art in science and innovation. (AU)
