Abstract

Animal experimentation models are the starting point of good scientific work, just as animal facilities with top-quality infrastructure contribute to the quality and reproducibility of research results. UFABC has been growing and consolidating its research groups in various areas of knowledge, particularly those involving the use of animal models, mostly rodents. The increasing demand from multiple groups has required the expansion of the breeding and production of these animals. The present proposal aims to operationalize the central rodent breeding facility in the Greater ABC region. The available infrastructure at UFABC includes a building of approximately 300 m², separate from the institution's other animal facilities, and built according to the most recent regulatory requirements. For its full operation, we request in this proposal the acquisition of ventilated racks for rats and mice to begin the production process. With the implementation of this breeding facility at UFABC, we will meet the demand of UFABC researchers and also become an animal production center in the region, being able to supply animals to local institutions, thus reducing stress from long-distance transportation and prioritizing animal welfare. Furthermore, the Central Animal Facility will contribute to raising the quality of research results involving animal experimentation at UFABC and other regional universities, enhancing the level of scientific output and the international recognition of their researchers and institutions.
