Abstract

The research deals with basic knowledge and development of special concrete applications in the design, construction and rehabilitation of structures. Special concrete means high performance concrete and other portland cement based materials with special characteristics, as high strength concrete, fiber reinforced concrete, reinforced mortar/fine grained concrete, precast concrete, lightweight concrete. The general objectives are directed to the development of materials, components and structural systems and to their performance evaluation through mathematical and physical modelling; to the construction method development; to the structural rehabilitation and to the technology transfer. The specific objectives of the several research projects refer to the following aspects:- evaluation of the performance improvement possibilities (including durability, structural behavior, constructibility, etc.) of the thin-walled structures by using additions as silica fume, polymers, short fibers, etc., also the appropriate techniques for design, construction and quality control.- new information production by means of theoretical and experimental studies on samples, models and prototypes, about the structural behavior of elements constructed or rehabilitated with special concretes and mortars, with and without prestressing. - development of composite sandwich structures analyzing the composite action of different materials and components. - development of the precast concrete field by means of new materials and improvement of the structural behavior knowledge.
