Abstract

The project on psychoanalytic psychotherapy research aims at 1) the assistance of welfare (low-income) patients referred by a school hospital, and 2) the teaching of psychotherapy to residents in psychiatry and psychologists specializing in mental health care. The main purpose is to evaluate the possibility of the application and the teaching of Psychoanalysis in a public health institution (that do not charge the patients). The project contains three clinical studies: 1) psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic study of patients with personality disorders (DSM-N) aiming at a) the investigation the psychoanalytical process, and b) the evaluation of the personality changes of gratuitous psychoanalytical psychotherapy viewing the efficiency of the treatment. Therefore, eight patients will be treated each one by a psychoanalyst, two or three times a week, for the period of three years. All the psychotherapeutic session's will be written down by the therapists and discussed among a staff of eight therapists in a weekly meeting that will be recorded and also transcribed later; 2) psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytical study of patients suffering from pain disorders (DSM-N) aiming at a) the investigation of the psychoanalytical process, and b) the evaluation of the personality changes gratuitous psychoanalytical psychotherapy viewing the efficiency of the treatment. Therefore, four patients with diagnostic of chronic pelvic pain (CID-10, 2000) and four patients with fibromyalgia (CID-10, 2000) will be treated in psychotherapy, twice a week, for a period of three years. AlI the psychotherapeutic session's wiIl be written down by the therapists and discussed among the staff of eight therapists in a weekly meeting that will be recorded and transcribed later; 3) the teaching of psychoanalytical psychotherapy to residents in psychiatry and psychologists on mental health care aiming at a) evaluating in what extent these professionals are able to learn and to understand the patient' s infernal world, psychic reality; b) observing how these professionals realize these concepts and how they work with them during the three years of their training process; c) assessing the personality changes of the patients viewing the efficiency of the treatment. Each professional will treat at least one patient in individual psychotherapy, once or twice a week, for a period of three years. The psychotherapeutic sessions will be written down and discussed in a weekly meeting with a supervisor. There will be six groups of four or five residents and psychologists under the supervision of a faculty member, which will evaluate their performance annually.
