Abstract

CD4+CD25+ cells are the most important cells in the control of immune response against self-antigens and contribute to peripherical tolerance. These cells also control the response to bacteria, virus, parasites and fungi, playing a critical role in preservation of the infectious agent. Recent data have shown that the mechanisms of peripherical tolerance, mediated by regulatory T cells also avoid an efficient anti-tumoral response, even in those situations when the tumoral antigens can be recognized. Despite the rapid increase in mechanistic knowledge about Treg, much remains to be learned, including (a) the mechanisms by which Treg control lymphocyte effector functions; (b) whether their primary actions are on lymphocytes or APC (or both); (c) the nature of their natural ligands; and (d) the mechanisms by which Treg control tumor development. Thus, in the present study we investigated the significance of intratumoral Treg cells in the regulation of the local immune response in actinic cheilitis and oral squamous cell carcinoma. (AU)
