Abstract

The mammal fauna of meso and megafauna species is composed mainly by herbivores and frugivores. Several of these mammals are important seed dispersers, or important in controlling the recruitment of plants through seed predation and herbivory. Poaching is reducing severely the biomass of these mammals all over the tropics, but especially in the Atlantic forest. Therefore, the removal of these animals may have profound effects on the diversity and composition of plant species. This proposal will use the defaunation gradient in the Atlantic forest to investigate the cascating effects caused by the removal of medium and large mammals on plant biomass and diversity. (AU)
