Meningo-encephalitis caused by HPV-5 and sulfur-induced polioencephalomalacia in bovines: clinical and laboratorial evaluation

Abstract

Bovine heath is a subject of great importance and neurological disorders cause serious economic losses. The most common diseases in Brazil are rabies, botulism, polioencephalomalácia (PEM) and meningoencephalite (herpes-virus type 5). PEM caused by excess of sulphur in the diet and meningoencephalite due to herpes-virus type 5 are clinically similar. The diagnosis can be obtained by examination of the cerebrospinal fluid, appropriate laboratory tests and post-mortem examination. Few studies investigated significant differences in these laboratory tests and post-mortem examination as complementary methods to distinguish diagnosis between these two diseases. The objective of the present work is to compare the results of clinical and laboratory tests between meningoencephalite caused by the HPV-5 and PEM caused for sulphur in bovines. 12 male Nelore calves will be used. They will be distributed in two experimental groups: six calves will be experimentally poisoned with sulphur and six calves will be experimentally infected with HPV-5. Animals in these two groups will be clinically evaluated and also will have laboratory components. In the two groups they will be evaluated clinical and laboratory (blood cell count, cerebrospinal fluid, sulfide concentration in rumen fluid, identification of the population of protozoa in rumen and detention of the virus in different areas of the central nervous system by isolation, PCR and PCR real time). After the death of the animals, histopathology exam of the central nervous system will be done to check for differences between these two neurological disorders. (AU)
