Abstract

It is controversial if the prognostic of breast cancer occurring in young women is worse than that of aged women. This subject is barely studied in young Brazilian women. Women under 35 are a special population of breast cancer patients that differ from older patients with respect to relative frequencies of familial vs. sporadic carcinomas and hormone receptor status. These patients may also differ in their relative proportions of breast cancer phenotypes as compared to older patients. The aim of this study is to examine the pathological and immunohistochemical indicators of the biological behavior of the mammary carcinoma in population of young Brazilian women (under 35 years), comparing with the presentation in women with more than 60 years. The study will be retrospective including cases from files of Consultoria em Patologia from 1997 to 2007. All tumors will be reviewed by the same pathologist who will select representative areas to tissue microarray blocks construction. Besides the classical predictive and prognostic factors routinely studied in breast cancer for clinical management as histologic type histological grade, vascular involvement, mitotic grade and immunohistochemical expression of hormonal receptors and HER-2, it is our objective to evaluate the frequency of basal-like phenotype in the two groups through histological and immunohistochemical markers recently described as nuclear grade, necrosis, pushing borders, triple-negative phenotype (ER-, PR-, HER-2-), Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR), Basal Cytokeratins 5/6, CD117 and vimentin. Statistical analysis will be performed using chi-square test. (AU)
