Epidemiology of anxiety under dental care in Araraquara city (SP)

Abstract

The aim of this work is to study the prevalence of anxiety under dental care and its association with previous experience and demographic characteristics of Araraquara city’s residents, at the age of 18 years and above. In this cross-sectional survey, samples will be selected from stratified analysis taking into account the number of residences of censitary sectors and sex. The residence selection will be done probabilistic way from maps of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics - IBGE. Each block of houses, of each sector will be numbered and the face of each block will be identified with words attributed in the clockwise. By using a random numbers table, the blocks to be visited will be assorted, as well as their faces and the residence that will be included in the sample. In each residence, only one resident will be interviewed. The sample size was fixed from the sample process of finite population, resulting in 1.068 individuals. Considering an absenteism of 20%, the sample size was estimated in 1.282 individuals. A formulary with pre-coded questions will be adopted as the measuring instrument and will include identification items such as sex, age, economic and educational levels, unpleasant dental experience in the past and specific questions that identifies the level of patient’s anxiety under dental treatment according to DAS scale (Dental Anxiety Scale) proposed by CORAH (1969) and adapted for the portuguese language by HU et al. (2006). The level of anxiety will be diagnosed as null, low, moderate and exacerbate. The age will be analyzed and the unpleasant dental experience in the past will be evaluated using a dicotomic scale. Economic and educational level will be evaluated by means of a questionnaire from Brazilian Institute of Market Research (ABIPEME, 1978). The interviews will be done through telephone calls by two examiners previously calibrated in a pilot study. The data base will be organized using STATA 9.0 program with descriptives analysis, and showed in tables, graphics and thematic maps will be confectioned in the Arcview GIS software. To evaluate associations it will be applied the chi-squared test (c2), with the significant level of 5%. The variables that present p<0.15 will be selected for the multivariate analysis. The data will be geoprocessed with the SPRING 4.2 and Arcview GIS softwares. (AU)
