Todays crucial concerns regarding issues involving environmental analysis and planning have contributed to the development of methodological approaches of diagnosis and prognosis focusing on the environmental zoning of hydrographic basins. In this context, the project presented here aims at the application of analytical and synthetic approaches in the elaboration of two zoning proposals for the hydrographic basin of the Ribeirão do Pântano stream in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, using remote sensing and geoprocessing techniques. Thus, an environmental diagnosis and prognosis of the study area is made, analyzing its environmental potentialities and limitations in terms of human occupation, as well as the current state of degradation of its natural resources. Aspects of the correlated environmental legislation are also investigated, aiming at its spatialization and a subsequent analysis of its effectiveness in the conservation of these resources. The results are presented in the form of a set of cartographic products prepared on a scale of 1:50,000 containing relevant information for the planning and management of the basin in question. In addition, based on these results, an evaluation is made of the advantages and disadvantages of the methodological approaches applied and the techniques to be employed. (AU)
