Machine Translation Portal: resources and tools for Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

This document describes a research proposal in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP) related to NLP multilingual applications, in particular, the Machine Translation (MT). Although much benefited by the advances of recent years, MT still requires research to overcome computational-linguistic and technological problems and it is still considered, by many, as a research area with not enough resources and tools. In this context, the project proposed here aims to "Promote the progress in machine translation and surveys in other subfields of PLN involving multilingual processing, especially with regard to the primary language of this project (the Brazilian Portuguese) by creating and making available computational-linguistic resources and tools involving two or more languages." Among the motivations for the development of this work are: the lack of basic resources of good quality for the Portuguese and the need to create resources that enable advances in machine translation. Furthermore, the multilingualism (directly related to various applications of NLP, in particular, MT) was one of the challenges pointed out during the CHARLA 2008, an event organized by several scientific societies including the SBC (Brazilian Computer Society). Thus, the project proposed here aims to gather, create, implement and evaluate resources and tools useful for MT and, finally, to make them available through a MT Portal. We expect that such tools and resources are useful not only for MT but also for human-assisted machine translation (eg translation memories) and machine-aided human translation (access to dictionaries, text processing etc.) among other NLP applications.
