Reproductive biology and dynamic population of the Penaeoidean shrimps (Crustacea, Decapoda) from southeastern Brazilian coast: latitudinal effect and suggestion for fishery control

Abstract

Two distinct sites (different latitudes) will be compared with respect to the latitudinal variations o the population dynamics and reproductive biology of the Penaoidean shrimps in order to check the paradigm of the latitudinal effect on such aspects (reproductive pattern, juvenile recruitment, sexual maturity, growth and longevity of the specimens). This proposal also focuses to obtain new and secure information for a better management and fishery control than the current one (IBAMA/CEPSUL) for Penaoidean shrimp fishery at the southeastern Brazilian coast. The samplings will be carried out in two distinct regions: at the north of the resurgence in Cabo Frio (Macaé, RJ) (22° 37'S and 41° 78'W) and other at the south (Ubatuba, SP) (23° 55'S and 46° 20'W). In each region, tree sites with 4 trawling/area each will be carried out monthly during one year-round. The trawling will be performed at 5, 10, 15 and 20m depth. Environmental factors (sediment texture and organic matter, temperature and bottom salinity and surface; and a-chlorophyll) will be registered and associated with the absolute abundance of each demographic category (juveniles, adult males, and adult females) of shrimps' species. The gonad development will be also taken into account. Statistical comparisons of the obtained data will be performed in order to check the null hypothesis (no difference between latitudes). The observation of differences will allow inferring about the decrease of the natural stock and the suggestion of a better management control. (AU)
