Flammability limits of biofuels

Abstract

The lower and upper flammable limits of a fuel are key tools to predict fire, assess the possibility of explosion and design protection systems. Currently, most countries use several standard experimental tests, which lead to the achievement of different experimental values for these limits. Moreover, Brazil has expanded its energy matrix for the production of biofuel (e.g biodiesel and ethanol). The study of the biofuel combustion and the experimental analysis to understand the flammability limits of pure and blended biofuels with diesel, automotive gasoline and kerosene for aviation and the construction of equipment for the testing are of great value in the current situation of the country and are the main objectives of this proposal. It will be investigated in this project the two main methods for obtaining the values of the flammability limits: the visual and the pressure. The standard tests will be modified and/or improved in order to obtain the exact values of interest for biofuels, both those that are used in automotive and aerospace industry. (AU)
